What to Do in Venice?

Ah, Venice. The canals, the gondolas, the piazzas, you’ve seen it all in postcards. But let me tell you, there’s more to this place than just the crowds around St. Mark’s Square. After spending three consecutive summers near Venice working at Camping Ca’Savio (so pretty much a local, right?), I’ve come to appreciate the hidden gems most tourists miss, and I want to share them with you. So, if you’re wondering what to do in Venice beyond the usual tourist traps, buckle up for a real, authentic Venice experience.

Go in low season!

1. Venice: Consider the Off-Season

Let’s get one thing straight: Venice is a must see. It’s one of those places that lives up to the hype. But, if possible, try visiting in the low season. The early spring or late autumn is perfect for Avoiding the massive crowds. Venice in low season is all yours to explore at your own pace. Plus, if you visit Venice by night, you’ll see a whole different side of the city. Picture this: quiet canals, sparkling lights, and the reflections on the water that’ll make you feel like you’re in a dream.

Relax in in the natural side of Venice

2. Get Lost in Venice’s Beautiful Gardens

Okay, I know what you’re thinking. Gardens? In Venice? But yes, the Giardini (gardens) are one of Venice’s best kept secrets. The Serra dei Giardini is a hidden gem where you can escape the crowds, grab a coffee, and just chill. It’s also home to some turtles (turtles in Venice?! You need to see it to believe it!) It’s a perfect break from the hustle and bustle of the main attractions.

Where the local's go

3. Sip Like a Local at Basegò Bar & Campo Santa Margherita

Venice can be pricey, no doubt about it. But if you know where to go, you can find great drinks without the tourist markup. Basegò Bar is a favorite, tucked away near Giardini, offering delicious cicchetti (Venetian tapas) and a cool laid-back vibe.
For even more affordable options, head to Campo Santa Margherita: a lively square packed with budget-friendly bars, thanks to the student crowd. One standout? The Aperol themed “Orange Bar”, which even has a cool rooftop hangout spot. It’s the perfect place to grab a spritz with friends!

Cool things to see!

4. Check Out the Hands Sculpture Near the Arsenale

One thing I love about Venice is how it blends the old with the new. The Hands Sculpture near the Arsenale is a perfect example of this. It’s this giant, striking piece of art that seems to pop out of the water and grabs your attention. It’s hard to explain, but it’s one of those pieces that makes you stop and think. Definitely worth checking out if you want a break from the usual art galleries.

Arty vibes!

5. Art Lovers, Don’t Miss the Venice Biennale and Film Festival

The Venice Biennale is the art event in the city. Whether you’re into contemporary art or architecture (or both), this is the place to be. The Biennale changes themes every year, so you’re never seeing the same thing twice. It’s held at Giardini, and it’s totally worth spending a couple of hours walking through the exhibits. And if you happen to be in Venice during the Venice Film Festival , you’re in for a treat. It’s one of the oldest film festivals in the world, and you can actually score cheap tickets for €10. Who knows, you might even spot a celeb!

The best photo spot in Venice?

6. Capture the Best Venice Photo at Ponte dell’Accademia

Alright, I’m going to let you in on a little secret: if you’re looking for the best photo spot in Venice, it’s Ponte dell’Accademia. This bridge offers a view of Venice that is chef’s kiss…especially at sunset! Thank me when your insta post blows up.

A cheaper way to Gondola!

7. Gondola Ride on a Budget? Yes, Please!

Look, I get it, gondola rides are the thing to do in Venice, but they can be a bit… expensive. Here’s the trick: head to Gondola Traghetto near the Rialto Bridge. For just €2, you can hop on a gondola and get a taste of the experience without breaking the bank. There’s usually a small line (even in summer!), but it’s totally worth it for that authentic Venice vibe. No need to book in advance, just show up, pay, and enjoy. But if you want the real deal gondola experience, we recommend getting a gondola with a big group! The more people there are, the cheaper it is when split among everyone. We also suggest going at sunset or nighttime for even more stunning views and fewer crowds!

The most beautiful fireworks!

8. Experience the Redentore Fireworks Festival

If you’re in Venice in July, the Redentore Fireworks are an absolute MUST SEE! This annual festival celebrates the end of the Plague that hit Venice in the 16th century. The entire city gets into the spirit, and Guidecca Island turns into a massive party with food, music, and of course amazing fireworks. It’s one of those events that makes you fall in love with Venice all over again.

Get into the Italian SPIRIT!

9. Catch a Local Football Match

For sports fans, nothing beats the energy of a local football match. Italians take their football seriously, and the atmosphere at a game is electric. Just a short walk from the main square, you can watch a real deal Italian football match! Whether you’re a die hard football fan or just looking to join in the excitement, it’s a fun and authentic way to experience Venice’s local culture.

See Venice from above!

10. Get a Stunning View from St. Mark’s Campanile

Want a stunning view of the whole city? Go up the St. Mark’s Campanile. It’s only about €10, and the view from the top is breathtaking. Venice looks even more magical from above, especially at sunset when the whole city glows. It’s a quick and easy way to see Venice from a whole new angle.

Discover Venice Like a Local

Venice isn’t just about the big tourist attractions. It’s about discovering the hidden gems, enjoying the local life, and experiencing the city in a more personal way. So, whether you’re a first timer or a seasoned traveller, take a step off the beaten path and see Venice through a local’s eyes. You’ll leave with memories that’ll last a lifetime.
