Here is my Story!

From Law essays to Adventures in Italy!

Work Abroad

Who am I?

I am Simeon and this summer I worked as a Sports Entertainer at Camping Ca’Savio. I am a second year law student, who never really imagined this summer to be as exciting and adventurous as it was. Wanna hear about my adventure?

Here is my story!

How it all started: The Job Hunt Chronicles

Here I was, 10pm in the library on a cold February day for another consecutive day, scrolling through countless job offers from abroad: America, Alaska, Japan, Thailand but none could grab my attention. Again disappointed I headed home for the night and thought to myself “damn I guess I will be stuck here, so much for a summer adventure”. Days passed and I found myself telling my friends about this, they didn’t seem too concerned or really showed any interest but here we were. The last one of the group arrived and I explained to him yet again the same old boring story and his face quickly lit up and a cheerful smirk began to appear. He then proceeded to tell me about this company called “Apply” that hires entertainers in Italy and across Europe, that he previously worked with. I was intrigued and decided to put some research into it. It was all super straight forward- click, click, click and I found myself in front of the HR manager in a meeting inviting me to a training weekend in VENICE!

Training Weekend!

The Truth About the Training Weekend!

At first it seemed quite dooming to dance, sing, shout and perform whilst having “fun”- but here we were. A group of young people without a clue in the world what to expect from this “Apply” company but as the days passed in the training weekend we all found ourselves enjoying it more and more everyday and by the last day I did not want to leave! The thrill and joy I had from the job, meeting new people and experiencing a new culture was unbeatable and I wanted it to carry on!

The Day to Day Stories

Here I was, two months later on the doorstep of the Ca’Savio campsite, not really knowing what to expect for the next couple of months. I was quickly greeted and introduced to the team and little did I know those same people would become friends for life and my family for the summer.

Settling in was difficult at first: breaking down lego, playing basketball with the kids, learning the beach volleyball rules and especially learning the happy disco dances (that’s what I get for not doing my homework I guess). But at the two week mark I found my sweet zone, I was getting closer and closer with the team, stopped getting lost around the campsite and really let my skills show and come out of their shell.

Before I knew it I became a master at breaking down lego, beach volleyball, table tennis and even archery but the most surprising talent that I picked up was remembering the next move to a dance (coming from a really inexperienced and uncoordinated “dancer”).

Unforgettable Moments: The good, the Cute and the Funny

Every unforgettable moment this summer had one thing in common: the team. If you are reading this before you start working or you are doing some research, it might sound hard to believe but the team is everything. The people around you quickly become friends, close friends and in a way family, you look out for each other, care, share moments and countless smiles.

The Good

If there was one moment that really stuck with me was when the team hired boats to take us around the Venice Lagoon on our day off. It was beautiful to see so much history and culture up close and be surrounded by such amazing people at the same time.

The Cute

On one of my first weeks at the camp, the little beach bar next to the camp decided to host a live music rock and roll night. It was surreal, being by the beach listening and dancing to live music when only a couple of weeks ago I was stuck in the library writing essays.

The Funny

One moment that really sticks out is one night during happy disco when the team decided to prank the boys by putting them centre stage, telling us to give 200% of energy and go over the moon with the dance to “Die Kuh Mathilde”. The catch to this was that they watched and left us to dance whilst we gave it our all.

My Advice To You

Looking Ahead and My Advice To You

Living, eating and working in Italy for a summer is the most beneficial decision anyone can make for a summer break, away from everything. You become engulfed in a different culture, attempt to learn different languages and get outside your comfort zone. Some of the skills I picked up over the summer continue to resonate with me and some I have even been able to apply to my studies and lifestyle. Being independent, confident, being outside your comfort zone and the importance of a positive mentality are just a few skills of the many I have learned through my summer with Apply.

If you’re ready to work hard, learn fast, and laugh often this is the job for you and you never know, maybe we’ll bump into each other! 🙂
